Duckpoppers Rock

new year's eve, in my opinion, is just an excuse for people to get drunk. yay, i know, we're celebrating a new year. but really, if you think about it, people just want to get wasted. which i've never understood. oh, i did my fair share of drinking in college, many years ago. seriously. my freshman year was a good example of why garbage pail punch should only be drunk in small doses, if at all.

we invited our good friends amy and matt over. we decided to do appetizers, as originally we were going to make this big-ass meal including a cooked ham, roasted asparagus, a kugel (remind to share the recipe, as it rocks!), and mashed potatoes. and lotsa wine. and champagne with grand marnier, which our darling robbie introduced us to for our chanukah-christmas dinner last sunday.

realizing that this monster meal would have all us 30-somethings passed out by 8:00 p.m., we opted for an appetizer dinner and let me tell ya, it was awesome. we served mozarella sticks, puff pastry hor d'vours, rotelle and chippies, sliced cheese and crackers, and bacon-wrapped shrimp. amy and matt brought those sweat and sour meatballs and little smokies (a total favorite of the adorable husband), amy's kick-ass salsa that she really should bottle and sell, tortilla rollup/pinwheels that rock, and all kinds of poppers made with duck that matt had personally shot. i only tried the duck wrapped in bacon, but damn!, it was awesome. seriously. frankly, i have to go with emeril on this one, as he points out, anything wrapped in bacon tastes good. damn skippy!

unfortunately, as me and adorable hubby (ah) had spent the entire day, pretty much, cleaning and prepping for the night, and then really tossing a lotta drinkies, i spent sunday sleeping off a killer migraine. don't know if it's me getting older or just the alcohol, but every time i drink, the next day i end up with a nasty migraine. which may explain why i don't think new year's eve is all that.

but, we sure had fun. any time you can play cranium with people you really like, while noshing on awesome snackies, and nursing a new drink called a "betty", life is good. so, cheers and happy new year!
